Itinerary

Montenegro in 7 Days: Coast, Lake Skadar & Durmitor

A week lets you see two very different sides of Montenegro: the Adriatic coast and the mountain north. The key is to accept the northbound transfer as a real travel day and keep weather-sensitive mountain plans flexible.

Trip overview

Best for

First-time visitors who want both coast and mountains

Pace

Varied; moderate coast days plus a longer mountain transfer

Transport

Car offers the most flexibility for the full route; transfers require more advance coordination

Day 1

Kotor & the inner bay

Open destination guide
Morning

Explore Kotor Old Town before the busiest part of the day. Prioritize the historic center and the parts of the walls or viewpoints that match your energy and weather.

Afternoon

Use the afternoon for the bay: Perast area, waterfront stops or a short local activity. Do not overfill the schedule—summer traffic can change transfer times quickly.

Evening

Stay around Kotor or the bay for dinner and a relaxed walk instead of adding another distant destination.

A strong first day with minimal backtracking.

Day 2

Tivat & the bay waterfront

Open destination guide
Morning

Move toward Tivat and explore the waterfront at an easy pace. This is a lighter day after Kotor and works well for a café stop, marina walk and practical errands.

Afternoon

Use the afternoon for nearby coastal areas or a local experience, depending on weather. Keep the route short if the next day continues toward Budva.

Evening

Stay in Tivat or continue toward your next base only if it reduces travel the following morning.

Useful as a transition day between the inner bay and Budva coast.

Day 3

Budva Old Town & coast

Open destination guide
Morning

Begin with Budva Old Town and the seafront while temperatures and crowds are usually easier to manage. Focus on the historic center before moving to the beaches.

Afternoon

Choose one coastal area or beach rather than trying to cover the entire Budva Riviera. Weather, parking and traffic should shape the plan.

Evening

Return to Budva for dinner, a waterfront walk or nightlife if that is part of your trip style.

Keep beach choices flexible; the right stop depends heavily on season and conditions.

Day 4

Lake Skadar

Open destination guide
Morning

Leave enough time for the road and make Lake Skadar the main focus of the day. Start from one lakeside area rather than trying to circle the whole lake.

Afternoon

Choose one experience—viewpoints, a boat outing, food or village time—and confirm current operating conditions directly before committing.

Evening

Continue toward Podgorica or stay near the lake depending on your next day and transport plan.

A slower nature day works better here than a checklist of many stops.

Day 5

Podgorica & practical city day

Open destination guide
Morning

Use Podgorica as a practical reset: walk central areas, handle travel needs and choose one or two city points rather than expecting a resort-style sightseeing day.

Afternoon

Explore local food, cafés or a nearby activity and prepare for the longer northbound leg if your itinerary continues to Durmitor.

Evening

Keep the evening easy and check the next day’s road and weather conditions before heading into the mountains.

This day adds urban contrast and reduces pressure before a mountain transfer.

Day 6

Transfer north to Žabljak

Open destination guide
Morning

Leave early enough for a relaxed northbound journey. Mountain travel deserves buffer for road conditions, stops and weather rather than a tightly timed plan.

Afternoon

Arrive in the Žabljak / Durmitor area, settle in and choose a light first activity close to your base.

Evening

Check the next day’s forecast and trail or road conditions before choosing a full mountain plan.

Treat the transfer itself as part of the day; do not overload it with distant activities.

Day 7

Durmitor day

Open destination guide
Morning

Choose one main Durmitor objective that fits the forecast, your fitness and current access conditions. Start early if your activity benefits from cooler or more stable weather.

Afternoon

Continue the same area or switch to a low-effort scenic stop rather than adding a second demanding route.

Evening

Return to Žabljak, review onward travel and keep enough margin if you need to drive south the following day.

Mountain conditions can change quickly; local and official information should take priority over a prewritten itinerary.

Find local services

Treat this as a planning framework, not a fixed schedule. Recheck current opening times, road conditions, transport and seasonal services before travel.
